Custom and Semi-Custom Designed Office Furniture
Omnirax is a design/build furniture company with CAD/CAM manufacturing capabilities. Virtually everything we’ve made since 1998 can be replicated with 0.005″ precision. In a sense, this makes everything we’ve produced over the last 16 years, a “product”. What you see throughout the office site are actually “base models” and their most popular variations as well as examples of Custom and Semi-Custom work we’ve done. In fact, we’ve made many more designs than can possibly be shown, with a multitude of features designed to personalize your office working environment.
We’ve chosen to enter the Office furniture market in a time of great change. But what has not changed in the office furniture market is the primary shape of the furniture. Most desks are still rectangles whereas virtually all Omnirax are curved, just like people. A great deal these days is being made about ergonomics. At Omnirax, with our background in design of music studio furniture, we’ve been paying particular attention to body position, reach, sound and sight lines long before the term ergonomics became popular.
For us, ergonomics means designing furniture around you – creating a work environment for your particular needs and your situation, rather than forcing you to adapt to the furniture, and this is where we excel.
As you peruse this site please bear in mind that what you see are basic configurations and explorations of where the market has led us.
Semi-Custom Modifications
What we call Semi-Custom is simply a modification of these existing designs – variations on a theme if you will. Pricing will be determined by the amount and complexity of the modifications we make for you.
Examples of modifications we routinely make include:
- Stretching or shrinking width.
- Raising or lowering height to suit your body build and preferred working position(s) (don’t forget to check out our Height Adjustable Desks) (hyperlink here).
- Adding doors, backs, sliding shelves, keyboard shelves, grommets and more.
- Changing laminates and molding colors.
The advantage of Semi-Custom is that you get a personalized product for a modest additional cost.

Custom Design
We know from experience that no two spaces are alike and most offices have their own unique personalities. We excel in what we call the Collaborative Discovery and Design Process: drawing on our expertise combined with a thorough exploration of your needs to build you exactly what you want.
Here’s how it works
We need a floor plan to begin with. We love CAD, but will take a .pdf, a sketch – whatever you can provide so that we can draw furniture in your space. Then we need you to consider the following, with respect to each type of space (Private Office, Shared Office, Open Plan) you wish us to furnish:
Private Office
- Your preferred orientation (which direction you wish to face), if already determined.
- Do you want your desk at standard height (+/- 29.5″) or taller or shorter or height adjustable.
- Tell us how much space you need around you, or describe the items you want close at hand, or send us a photo of your current workspace – it’s very helpful.
- Tell us about your technology – monitors, keyboards, iPads, etc. What’s important to you? Do you want keyboard /mouse shelves, monitor and or tablet arms?
- How much local storage do you need, for instance:
- How many drawers and what’s going in them (i.e. pencil, media, file drawers of all types)?
- How about covered storage (i.e. cabinets with floating shelves)?
- Do you need any additional storage in the same space – book cases, credenzas, mobile storage, etc.?
- Have you thought about how power and data get to your desk; do you need wire management?
- How about chairs? Omnirax is partnering with Via Seating to offer forward thinking “sophisticated design, spot on aesthetics at a sweet price.”
Additional consideration for Shared Office Spaces:</p?
- If you’re sharing space with a partner, co-worker or team-member tell us how you interact together, what you share and, along the lines of questions 1-6 above, what’s important to each of you individually.
Open Office / Open Plan
- Start by telling us what you’re trying to accomplish the number of people and how your people work and interact together. Are you trying to:
- Fit more people in less space
- Promote collaboration among team members
- Isolate people in individual spaces
- Some combination of the above
- Are all desks created equal?
- Does each person need the same amount of space
- Is there shared space within clusters
- Shared storage
- Your preferred orientation (which direction want your people to face), if already determined.
- Do you want your desk at standard height (+/- 29.5″) or taller or smaller or height adjustable?
- Tell us how much space you need around you, or describe the items you want close at hand, or send us a photo of your current workspace, it’s very helpful.
- Tell us about your technology – monitors, keyboards, iPads, etc. What’s important to you? Do you want keyboard /mouse shelves, monitor and or tablet arms.

A careful consideration of these factors will prepare you for a conversation with one of our product specialists or a consultation with one of our designers. Together you will explore what’s possible and what it will take to make your dream offices a reality.

Custom Solutions at Production (“Off the Shelf”) Prices
Need more than one? Producing custom designs in quantity significantly drives down unit costs. Achieve enough scale and you can easily get custom products at production prices.
If you need multiple workstations/desks and can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, our Design 1, Build 20 service is right for you.
At Omnirax, the most costly processes are: design time, CAD production (2D to 3D, 3D into machine language (CAM)), proto-typing (cutting, assembly, fit-testing), & documentation (bill of materials, instruction set, packaging scheme). These are the elements in every product we make.
Our general rule of thumb is that the price of a “one off” (single unit) Custom project, tends to be twice that of the same design once that design becomes a Production product.
A custom designed workstation built from the ground up that costs $3,000.00 would cost only $1,500.00 once the “custom costs” ($1,500.00) are backed out and that design becomes a Production model.
What this means for you, is that making multiple units of the same design quickly drives the custom price down to affordability by dividing the “custom costs” by the number of units ordered. For example:
1 @ $ 3,000.00 ($1500 + $1500 Custom costs)
2 @ $ 2,250.00 each ($1500 + $750 Custom costs)
5 @ $ 1,800.00 each / unit ($1500 + $300 Custom costs)
10 @ $ 1,650.00 / unit ($1500 + $150 Custom costs)
20 @ $ 1,575.00 / unit ($1500 + $75 Custom costs)
This equates to a 5% premium over a Production product that doesn’t quite get you everything you need. And that 5% premium can be further reduced by ordering 50 units (2%) or more.
Would you pay 5% more to get exactly what you want?
In Summary
Collaborative design, careful prototyping, consistent production runs, clever packaging and thorough documentation makes purchasing in quantity from Omnirax a value-added and satisfying experience. You always get what you need and more than you want at a price you can afford.
