Custom and Semi-Custom Designed Technical Furniture
Omnirax is a design/build furniture company with CAD/CAM manufacturing capabilities. Virtually everything we’ve made since 1998 can be replicated with 0.005″ precision. In a sense, this makes everything we’ve produced over the last 16 years, a “product”. What you see on the product pages are actually “base models” and their most popular variations. In fact, we’ve made many, many more designs than can possibly be shown individually, with a multitude of features designed to personalize the working environment just for you.
The models you see in Technical Furniture fall within four broad categories:
- Built around a specific piece of equipment
- Built around a specific spatial arrangement
- Built to a specific size
- Built to a specific function
But all of them are really just suggestions of what is possible for us to do for you.
What we call Semi-Custom is a modification of an existing or already produced design – variations on a theme if you will. Pricing will be determined by the amount and complexity of the additions or modifications we make.
What we call Custom is any design which must be put through a more involved set of processes – including CAD drafting, programming, precision test fitting, and thorough documentation. More hands, more steps naturally mean a higher price point, but the result is a piece without compromise designed and built for the way you work. A general rule of thumb is that pricing on custom pieces starts at roughly twice what a comparable production piece sells for. Need something like nothing you’ve ever seen before? No problem – we love a challenge and consistently exceed expectations.
Semi-Custom Modifications
Examples of modifications we routinely make include:
- Adding or removing rack spaces
- Stretching or shrinking width
- Increasing or Decreasing vertical clearances
- Adding doors, backs, sliding shelves, keyboard shelves, grommets
- Changing laminates and molding colors and combinations
The advantage of Semi-Custom is that you get a personalized product for a modest additional cost.

Custom Design
Approximately 40% of what we sell is custom furniture. We excel in what we call Collaborative Aided Design: drawing on our expertise combined with a thorough exploration of your needs to build you exactly what you want.
Here’s how it works:
Your task is to think about space, gear, budget – and most importantly – what you will primarily be doing – function/application etc. – and how you do it.
- Space: Measure your room size, area or available space. Get a sense of where you wish the furniture to reside.
- Gear: We don’t necessarily need to know everything you own (though our product specialists love to talk about gear), but we do need to know how much stuff you have, how much space it requires and how you interact with it.
- Budget: Even if the sky’s the limit – there’s still a budget. A realistic sense of what you wish to spend will help us help you determine if custom is right for you and how elaborate you can go.
- Think about how you work, what you’re trying to do and what’s most important to you. In a seated position, our working environment consists of our knees to our nose and what’s within arm’s reach. The best, most ergonomic design is often a compromise weighted to your fit your personal preferences.
A careful consideration of these factors will prepare you for a conversation with one of our product specialists or a consultation with our designers. Together we will explore what’s possible and what it takes to make your dream studio a reality.

Need more than one? Producing custom designs in quantity significantly drives down unit costs. Achieve enough scale and you can easily get custom products at production prices.
If you need multiple workstations/desks and can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, our Design 1, Build 20 service is right for you.
At Omnirax, the most costly processes are: design time, CAD production (2D to 3D, 3D into machine language (CAM)), proto-typing (cutting, assembly, fit-testing), & documentation (bill of materials, instruction set, packaging scheme). These are the elements in every product we make.
Our general rule of thumb is that the price of a “one off” (single unit) Custom project, tends to be twice that of the same design once that design becomes a Production product.
A custom designed workstation built from the ground up that costs $3,000.00 would cost only $1,500.00 once the “custom costs” ($1,500.00) are backed out and that design becomes a Production model.
What this means for you, is that making multiple units of the same design quickly drives the custom price down to affordability by dividing the “custom costs” by the number of units ordered. For example:
1 @ $ 3,000.00 ($1500 + $1500 Custom costs)
2 @ $ 2,250.00 each ($1500 + $750 Custom costs)
5 @ $ 1,800.00 each / unit ($1500 + $300 Custom costs)
10 @ $ 1,650.00 / unit ($1500 + $150 Custom costs)
20 @ $ 1,575.00 / unit ($1500 + $75 Custom costs)
This equates to a 5% premium over a Production product that doesn’t quite get you everything you need. And that 5% premium can be further reduced by ordering 50 units (2%) or more.
Would you pay 5% more to get exactly what you want?
